Cameras For Girls Partners with Women's eNews

We are thrilled to announce that Cameras For Girls has embarked on an exciting new partnership with Women's eNews. This collaboration is poised to significantly elevate the opportunities for our young female photographers and storytellers by offering them a 6-month journalism mentorship and equipping them with essential skills and platforms to achieve greater professional and personal success.

Introducing Lydia Felly Akullu

Lydia Felly Akullu, another graduate of our Cameras For Girls program from the 3rd cohort in 2023, is employed full-time as a journalist but faces challenges in achieving pay equity. By being internationally published, she and her peers can leverage their enhanced profiles to negotiate for better compensation and opportunities.

In Uganda, many young women face substantial challenges in achieving pay equity with their male counterparts, even when they secure paid work as journalists. This partnership aims to address this disparity by enhancing the skills and marketability of our participants, as well as their writing and storytelling skills. Furthermore, two of their articles will be published internationally through Women's eNews. Thus, these young women will gain the credentials needed to negotiate better pay and more significant career opportunities.

Skill Development and Marketability

This collaboration offers Cameras For Girls participants a unique opportunity to receive extensive training that hones their writing and storytelling abilities beyond what we already provide in our program, and allows them to get access to partners on a global scale. They will also receive feedback and support to enhance their captions on their photos, which is just as important as the initial story. These dual competencies are crucial in today's media landscape, making our graduates more competitive in the job market. The experience of being published in a renowned international outlet like Women's eNews will provide them with a portfolio demonstrating their capabilities and professionalism, increasing their employability and bargaining power.

At the core of this partnership is a commitment to promoting gender equality. By empowering young women with the skills to tell their own stories and those of their communities, we challenge the systemic biases contributing to gender inequality. This initiative gives our participants a voice, ensuring that their perspectives and experiences are recognized and valued globally. The international exposure and professional recognition gained through this collaboration will enable these young women to advocate for themselves and their communities more

How To Support More Girls Through This Program

The collaboration between Cameras For Girls and Women's eNews represents a significant step towards empowering young women in Uganda. By enhancing their skills in photo captioning, writing, and storytelling, increasing their marketability, and promoting gender equality, this partnership promises to profoundly impact the lives of our participants and their communities.

The cost for each girl to go through the 6-month program is $150 USD. Please consider donating below if you wish to sponsor more girls to receive this opportunity.

Lydia is the first to undertake this mentorship offered by Women’s e-News, and we look forward to enrolling more students as the partnership progresses.
