Our 4-Phase Program
Programming that leads to job creation and the alleviation of poverty.
Our mission at Cameras For Girls is to equip young African women with photography and ethical storytelling skills to break gender barriers and build careers in male-dominated media spaces. The goal is financial independence and the ability to use their voices because they are stifled by cultural barriers and barriers to entry.
Young women across Africa encounter numerous barriers on their path to career success, ranging from limited opportunities to cultural biases, systemic harassment, and gender discrimination.
Cameras For Girls prepares African women to surmount these challenges and enter paid jobs in media. Our year-long program equips our students with a camera to keep and skills in photography, ethical storytelling, and business.
While our primary focus is on young women who want to become journalists, we also nurture talent in photography, communications, and related fields that have traditionally been male-dominated.
We know our program works: An impressive 80% of our graduates have secured full-time paid positions in journalism, communications, and photography-related careers.
But the impact of our work extends beyond the individual women we train. By equipping our students with skills and confidence, we improve the lives of their families and communities. Our program has a ripple effect that creates more equitable and prosperous communities.
And our impact will continue to grow across Africa. Through our commitment to gender equality, poverty alleviation, and job creation, we will make a tangible impact on the lives of girls, women, families, and communities across the continent.
The 4-Phases of Our Flagship Program
Our students practice their storytelling skills on the 4th day of the workshop.
Phase 2
After the in-person workshop, the training continues online. During this phase, the students concentrate on learning advanced photography concepts while continuing to apply ethical storytelling principles.
This phase includes:
24/7 access to a purpose-built video training platform where students can watch the videos, learning about photography, storytelling, and business skills.
Weekly Zoom meetings to discuss their learning and receive feedback on their photos.
Bi-weekly photo review and monthly assignments to develop their skills.
Training in digital marketing skills.
Training in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Phase 3
Phase 3 introduces students to business skills and finding a job, aligning with UN SDG Goal #1 to end poverty. Our students learn how to write their resumes and a compelling LinkedIn profile. We cover business planning and creating a financial cushion for those who want to start their own business. Finally, our students learn how to network effectively, including promoting themselves on social media, researching job opportunities, and building a professional online presence to increase their chances of finding a well-paying job.
Phase 4
During Phase 4, students enter an intensive 6-month mentorship program, receiving one-on-one individualized support and guidance. We want to launch our students into the professional world with confidence in their skills and ability to navigate challenges.
We pave the way for their success, turning dreams into reality, one mentorship at a time.
