Amina Mohamed

Founder, Executive Director and Lead Photographer

Amina Mohamed, founder and executive director of Cameras For Girls, came to Canada as a refugee from Uganda at the age of three after facing exile by then-president Idi Amin. The freedom and opportunities she experienced in Canada inspired her to create Cameras For Girls, a Canadian registered charity dedicated to empowering young women in Africa. This initiative honors the countless women and girls in Uganda who did not have the same opportunities.

Paying It Forward

With fifteen years of experience as a photographer and filmmaker in the Canadian film and television industry, Amina wanted to pay it forward to young women in Uganda, helping them get a foot in the door. This expertise has allowed Amina to guide students toward successful careers in the media industry. She never imagined that the challenges women faced in finding paid work in male-dominated media spaces in Uganda were widespread across Africa. What started as a small initiative has become a transformational movement, expanding to Tanzania in November 2023, with plans to continue across Africa where the need is greatest.

As a proud Canadian, Amina uses every opportunity to promote our values of generosity and social justice, including:

Global Leadership - In March 2024, Amina was the only Canadian selected from 150 women to attend the Vital Voices Global Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. She spoke on a panel about gender equality, showcasing Canada's commitment to global conversations on equality.

Inspiring Change - Amina speaks to aspiring photographers, youth, and older women about our work and the global struggle for gender equality. Our mission inspires systemic change in Africa and Canada, where we strive for equality.

Professional Development - Cameras For Girls builds LinkedIn profiles for our students with the help of Canadian consultants, benefiting our students and contributing to the Canadian economy by engaging local professionals.

Cross-Cultural Mentorship - Half of our volunteers and mentors are Canadian, offering unique cross-cultural exchanges. Canadian mentors gain a deeper understanding of global issues while our students receive diverse perspectives and guidance.

Amina's dedication to empowering young women through Cameras For Girls embodies the spirit of resilience, generosity, and social justice that defines the Canadian identity. Her work continues to inspire and create meaningful change both locally and globally.
