Phase 1: Hands-On Introduction to Photography

Our program kicks off with a 4-day workshop held in the host country. Each student receives a camera to keep and is taught the fundamentals of photography, including camera operation, the technical aspects of the camera, and storytelling.

Workshops and Activities:

  • Basic Camera Operation: Students learn how to handle and use their cameras, including adjusting settings and understanding different functions.

  • Photography Techniques: Instruction on the exposure triangle, framing, composition, and capturing compelling images.

  • Storytelling through Photography: Techniques for telling powerful stories through ethical photography constraints.

Field Experience:

On the 4th day, students get hands-on experience capturing stories through a partnership with a local NGO. This practical experience helps students apply what they've learned and provides the NGO with edited images and stories for their marketing needs. Some of our partners to date have been Concern For The Girl Child and Girl Up Uganda. In 2024, for our upcoming Train the Trainer program, we will work with Farmsell, which works with local farmers to help them sell their produce internationally for fair prices.

Key Skills Taught:

  • Technical Proficiency: Understanding how to operate a camera confidently.

  • Creative Vision: Developing an eye for composition and storytelling.

  • Real-World Experience: Gaining practical experience in a real-world setting.

Relevance to the Media Industry:

These foundational skills are crucial for any budding journalist or photographer. Especially when our students face gender bias and hardships gaining a foothold in the male-dominated industry, these skills help them stand above the rest. Technical proficiency and creative vision are essential for producing high-quality visual content, a key asset in the media industry.

Phase 2: Advanced Online Training and Digital Skills

After the initial workshop, training continues online with a comprehensive curriculum that combines photography and ethical storytelling methodology.

Components of Phase 2:

  • Video Training Platform: Students have 24/7 access to a purpose-built platform for instructional videos.

  • Weekly Zoom Meetings: Regular discussions to provide feedback on their photos and discuss photography concepts.

  • Bi-weekly Photo Reviews and Monthly Assignments: Structured assignments and reviews to enhance their skills.

  • Digital Marketing Skills: Training in digital marketing to understand how to promote their work effectively.

  • Editing Lab Access: Hands-on training in Photoshop and Lightroom at the editing lab in the host country.

Key Skills Taught:

  • Advanced Photography Techniques: Refine skills and learn new techniques.

  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in using photo editing software and digital marketing tools.

  • Self-Discipline and Time Management: Managing their learning schedule and meeting assignment deadlines.

Relevance to the Media Industry:

Proficiency in photo editing and digital marketing is vital in the media industry. These skills ensure that students can produce professional-quality images and effectively promote their work.

Phase 3: Business Skills and Career Preparation

In Phase 3, the focus shifts to business skills and career preparation, which are crucial for finding employment or starting a business.

These business skills are essential for securing well-paying jobs or starting successful businesses. Networking and a solid online presence are vital in the media industry.

Phase 4: Mentorship and Job Placement

At this pivotal stage, mentoring becomes the secret ingredient to success. Our girls, equipped with refined skills, are ready to secure meaningful employment, the ultimate goal of their journey with Cameras For Girls.

Mentorship Program:

  • Individualized Support: Mentors provide personalized guidance and support, helping students navigate the job market.

  • Professional Advice: Mentors offer insights into the media industry and help students refine their career paths.

Key Benefits:

Mentorship and networking are critical for career growth in the media industry. The support from experienced professionals helps bridge the gap between training and employment, turning dreams into reality.

At Cameras For Girls, empowering young women with these skills helps them enter the media industry, gives them the confidence to tell their stories, and influences the world around them.
