Why Phase 5 To the Cameras For Girls Program Has Emerged As a Beacon of Hope
In a world where gender inequality and patriarchal norms persist, initiatives to empower girls and women become crucial in reshaping societal dynamics. The Cameras For Girls program, particularly its Phase 5, which has just recently been released, has emerged as a beacon of hope for girls and women in Uganda who face daunting challenges like sexual harassment and societal pressures to conform. This innovative initiative provides them with skills and instills confidence and resilience to thrive in a patriarchal society.

Understanding the Context
Like many other countries, Uganda grapples with deeply entrenched gender biases and power imbalances. Young women often face sexual harassment, limited educational or vocational opportunities, and restricted access to decision-making positions. The Cameras For Girls program recognizes these issues and seeks to address them at its core by empowering young women with the tools to create change for themselves and other women in the community.
However, this issue is not only limited to the journalism and/or photography industries and/or Uganda. It is prevalent across all margins of society, worldwide. Cultural norms and traditions, while deeply valued, can sometimes clash with the aspirations of women to participate fully in various industries. Gender roles that assign women primarily to domestic spheres limit their access to education and career opportunities. Furthermore, the expectations placed on women to prioritize family over career often hinder their progression in the workplace.
Phase 5: The Turning Point
Phase 5 of the Cameras For Girls program became a necessity when more and more women in our program were complaining about issues such as sexual harassment and the demands for money or sex to be paid at work. Some were relaying stories of how their bylines were exchanged with a male counterpart that did not write the story, as their editors felt that more of their readers would be attuned to the story if a male wrote it over a female. Others relayed how they felt unsafe due to gender-based violence at home and work due to their demands to be heard in a world that prefers to silence them.
Other than teaching these young women photography, storytelling and business skills, Cameras For Girls is interested in supporting these young women to fight for their rights to be heard.
Led by two former students from the Cameras For Girls program, Phase 5 builds on the following:
Community and Support: The program creates a supportive community where participants can share experiences, provide encouragement, and collectively address issues they encounter. This network amplifies their impact and promotes a sense of unity.
Challenging Norms: Capturing images empowers girls to challenge societal norms and question existing power structures. By showcasing their perspective, they can redefine narratives and highlight issues that often go unnoticed.
Building Confidence: Phase 5 of the Cameras For Girls program hones technical skills and cultivates self-confidence. Participants learn that their voices and stories matter, instilling a sense of self-worth that transcends beyond the program.
Breaking the Silence on Harassment: Sexual harassment is pervasive for many women worldwide. By capturing instances of harassment through their lenses and or their written stories, these young women are breaking the silence and raising awareness about the urgency of addressing this issue.
Conclusion
Phase 5 of the Cameras For Girls program is about creating a movement of empowered young women who can challenge societal norms, advocate for their rights, and pave the way for change. This program empowers them to rewrite the narratives that have held them back for far too long by equipping them with the means to capture and share their stories. As we progress, we must continue supporting initiatives like this, as they are essential in the journey toward gender equality and a more inclusive society.
Aside from having a private Whatsapp group where the participants can share and support each other, the girls are allowed once a month to gather together, have fun and support each other in a safe space. However, this can be costly, so if you would like to help support this gathering, kindly consider donating via Zeffy. Zeffy is a free-fee online registered platform that gives us 100% of all donations provided.
