Empowering Through Media

Cameras For Girls recognizes that media is a potent tool for change, and we are committed to leveraging it to advance women's rights. Here's how we are making a difference:

  1. Breaking Stereotypes: We boldly challenge stereotypes and preconceptions that hinder gender equality. By doing so, we play a pivotal role in boosting the self-esteem and confidence of women, allowing them to pursue their interests without limitations.

  2. Fostering Creativity: We nurture the creativity of our participants, granting them the freedom to experiment with various forms of media. This approach enables them to express themselves and find their inner voice.

Advocacy for Women's Rights

Cameras For Girls goes beyond teaching technical skills; we advocate for women's rights in media, by doing the following:

  1. Storytelling for Change: Through our workshops and mentorship, we empower women to craft compelling narratives that matter to them; they can touch upon issues or topics that inspire other women in their communities. We teach them how to become storytellers who can influence opinions and challenge the status quo.

  2. Building a Supportive Community: Our organization creates a supportive community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for gender equality. By connecting women with mentors and peers who are equally committed to women's rights, we establish a network of advocates ready to tackle the hard work.

  3. Amplifying Diverse Voices: Cameras For Girls ensures that the stories and perspectives of marginalized women are heard. We empower women from diverse backgrounds, creating a more inclusive and representative media landscape.

To give an example, recently one of our students from our 4th cohort had gone to a nearby boxing ring in Kampala, where she used to take boxing lessons. She decided to do her weekly photo practice there while watching one of the star boxers spar with a partner. One of the photos she took, was published in the Daily Monitor Newspaper without her knowledge or consent. Worse, the credit for that photo went to a male photographer, who was not even at the boxing match.

She asked me what she should do. I told her to first go back to the boxing manager and make the plea for them to correct this, which she did and he refused, stating it was not a big deal. Then I advised her to go back to the newspaper and ask them to put a correction in the newspaper, which again was denied. At this point, she lost the motivation to continue.

The following week she went back to take more photos, but this time she did not hand them over before getting something in writing that she would be credited in full for the photos she was taking. She also went to the photographer and to his credit, he advocated on her behalf with the Daily Monitor, and she got her first nationally published credit.

Sadly, this is a common occurrence when it comes to women in the media. They either face systemic harassment, lack of pay, or an outright refusal by their male bosses to get credit for the work they did, which leaves many turning away from working in the media space altogether.

Cameras For Girls is working tirelessly to champion the rights of these young women so that they can get equal rights and pay for equal work.

Why It Matters

In a world where gender inequality persists, advocating for women's rights in the media is paramount. At Cameras For Girls, our mission aligns with the broader movement for gender equality, challenging systemic barriers that women face in media and society. When women have the skills and confidence to use media as a platform for change, they become catalysts for progress, especially in patriarchal societies where cultural bias is deeply entrenched.

Cameras For Girls is not just about teaching women how to use cameras; it's about empowering them to use their voices and vision to advocate for their and women's rights at large. By breaking stereotypes, fostering creativity, and providing a supportive community, our organization is championing the cause of women's rights in the media space. In a world where the power of media is undeniable, Cameras For Girls is leading the way in promoting gender equality and amplifying women's voices everywhere.
